YELLOW BELT!!!

Matthew and Jacob started Taekwondo about 7 weeks ago! Troy has always wanted to put them in - and we have some friends that are really into it. They pointed us to a FANTASTIC place - and we LOVE it! Zachy will start when he turns 5!

Taekwondo is STRICT!! The boys have to pay attention, answer "Sir" to the master and instructor any time they ask them to do anything. They also learn specific kicks, stances and forms. In class, you have to demonstrate that you are paying attention and practicing at home...and if the master feels like you have been doing a good job, he gives you a stripe that corresponds with the next colored belt - yellow for the boys. They need 2 stripes to be able to test for the next belt!

After 7 weeks, the boys were ready to test for their yellow belt! (You start off as white). So we practiced and practiced! They had to know:

1 - How to count from 1 to 10 in Korean
2 - The white belt kick - hammer kick
3 - 14 basic forms of Taekwondo

You test for the Grand Master (like the grandpa) and 3 masters! They did FANTASTIC!!! The other kids testing for yellow were all 8 years old or above - and my boys held their own!

After they tested for everything we practiced...the master announced that they would have to break a board with their white belt kick! WHAT?! We hadn't practiced this at all!!

The boys lined up - Matthew was second in line. He tried his first time and was a little light - but the second time HE NAILED IT!! Broke it right in half. Then Jacob was up - he broke it his FIRST TRY!! They were so proud! (Even some of the older kids had to try a couple times to break it!).

Oh...and now they get their yellow belt and a TROPHY! And they keep the wood they broke! So cool!

Needless to say - we love Taekwondo. It gives the boys confidence - give them the ability to learn something, practice it and then demonstrate their ability in testing situations! Great life experience!

After a year and a half hiatus....we're back!

That's right! The Sheens are back online!

You might have a bear with us a bit as I go back and update the year and a half that I missed. I'll be as brief as I can!!

Matthew just finished his first season of t-ball! By the end of the season, Matthew was able to hit off the coach pitches every time he was at bat! He was 1 of 4 boys voted to the All-Star team by the rest of his teammates! (We think it might have been a bit of a popularity contest as M &J were the 2 smallest on the team! But twins are COOL!)

Matt is finishing up Joy School, his last year of preschool and will start Kindergarten in August! He is excited to be a Bull Dog! He's also ready to go to a "real" school (instead of people's homes!)

Matt just started Taekwondo and is loving it!! Believe it or not, the thing he struggles with the most is being LOUD ENOUGH! If you heard him at home, you'd never believe it!

Matt LOVES music. When nobody is looking, he is constantly dancing. And he never stops singing (right on tune - just like his mom!) : ) He begs for piano lessons and we're about to start being a little more consistent.

Matt is a great big brother and is the peace-maker in our house! We love this guy!

Jacob is SO excited right now for his dad to come home from his Asia trip. He sent dad with a list of things to find for him: 1 - a necklace with a shark tooth, 2 - a necklace with a dragon tooth, 3 - an elephant tooth (apparently still attached to the elephant). As his dad was leaving, he asked to see his dad's reminder list to make sure he wouldn't forget! This kid is thorough!

Jakey just finished his first t-ball season as well. He played a whole game at short-stop and didn't let one ball get by him. He has worked hard and really learned to get his body in front of the ball! He was also 1 of 4 boys voted by his teammates to the All-Star team.

Jakey also just started Taekwondo. You should see this little guys' form already! It's like he was born to hit and kick (that or he's had a lot of practice at home!) He's excited to test for his yellow belt!

Jakey loves to draw and color and he's getting really good at writing as well. He just colored and wrote a Thank You note for his grandma-great for the shirts she sent him and his brothers! He also draws pictures to send to dad on his business trips!

Jakey is also finishing up his last year of preschool and is excited to start kindergarten! They'll be in separate classes this year - but I know they are going to thrive!

Jakey is our little thinker - he figures things out and asks lots of questions! We love him!

Zachary just started preschool! He loves it! The very first day, his friend Matthew came straight up to him and asked him to go see the fish-tank and the kid has loved it ever since. No crying, no wanting to stay home! He's ready! His friend Miro is from Finland and his name is pronounced with an accent that Zachy can't say - so he calls him "Noodle" - that's how he hears it!

As you can see in his picture, Zachy is our comedian. He'll do ANYTHING for a laugh! And he quite often has all of us in tears from laughing so hard!

Zachary has found his independence - especially with clothes! His likes 4 outfits - and if he can't wear one of those, he LOSES IT! His favorite outfits are (1) a black long-sleved Harley Davidson shirt with a bird on it (his "birdy shirt") with black exercise pants that he calls his "noisy pants" cause they make a noise when he walks, (2) a long-sleeved green shirt with matching green sweat pants, (3) his glow (or gray) outfit which consists of a grey BYU shirt and grey sweat pants and (4) his striped red shirt with red shorts. Anything else - HE WON'T WEAR!! Most of this stuff is hand-me-downs and are on their last leg! It's a good thing he has such a cute face! : )

Zachy is so big, people ask us where ever we go if we have triplets! As of right now, he is 1 inch shorter than his brothers and he weighs more than one of them!!

Zachy is our baby - we keep asking him to stop growing, but he just can't help it! We love him too!

Rock Angels

Why is it that when it finally hits 50 degrees in Utah in the spring, all of the BYU students head outside in shorts and t-shirts for some sun-bathing..............but when it hits 50 degrees in Texas in the fall/winter, we send our kids out bundled up as if it's below freezing?!

Seriously - it may have been 52 outside today - but it felt like 30!! And I wasn't about to let my boys get pneumonia! So I bundled them up!

And when you're all bundled up - what do you do? You make angels of course.

Rockets.....and Thanksgiving

This year for Thanksgiving, we had a fantastic treat. Troy's dad, Mike, and family came down from Wichita Falls (aka "The Falls") - and Mike cooked a feast. Turkey, gravy, potatoes, sweet potatoes, adobo sweet potatoes, 3 different kinds of stuffing, 3 different types of cranberry sauce, veggies, rolls.......the list goes on and on!! It was fantastic - Thank You Mike!!

The rest of us got to fill our day with all kinds of fun activites while the feast was being prepared.

The boys kicked off the morning with the Turkey Bowl........we took home some dirty, dirty boys.

Next.....the highlight of the day for the boys!! Troy had been working on rockets for days - he made one for each of the boys, red for Matt, blue for Jake, white for Zachy and black for Nathan.

Armed with their rockets, they headed to Old Settlers Park and shot them "to the moon" in Zachy's words.

And did you know that you eat pumpkin pie like just like you eat pizza?

Why, you ask? Because they're both triangles!!

Do you know how to make sure cd/dvd's stick to the little windows on french doors?

Well, just ask my boys - because they figured it out. How did I not notice, sitting here in my study (which is guarded by the said french doors), reading updated blog posts and ignoring my ill-behaved children?! I don't know - I just didn't!!

How do you do it you ask?

Well - you go and get the soap from the hall closet and put a little bit (well maybe a TON) on the back of each of the said dvd/cd's.................................and VOILA.........they stick!!

And I hear from a really excited Jakey, "Dad's gonna be so excited we put these on here!!"

OH REALLY!!!!!

I'm off to get these boys in a bath and find my trusty Windex!!

Halloween 2008

For weeks and weeks before Halloween, the boys could be found in my closet, trying to find some way to get up to their costumes. They are officially OBSESSED with Power Rangers.

Jacob informed me that his "whole" name is "JMS Blue Power Ranger". And of course Matthew's is "MPS Red Power Ranger". Zachy is happy to take whatever Power Ranger is left over (what a good boy)!

FINALLY Halloween came - and my 3 boys turned into Power Rangers (keep in mind that I only had 2 Power Ranger costumes!)

So when I went to put on Zachy's costume, here's what I got.........
We convinced everybody we were with to call him Black Power Ranger. Of course everytime people called him Batman, I cringed and waited for the drama!!! Thank goodness this kid can be easily distracted by a couple of suckers!!

The boys had a great time Trick-or-Treating and fell in love with one of the girls we were out with!! She was SO fun!! Matthew keeps on talking about her!!

Look at all of that candy..................their buckets were filled to the top!

And when the red and blue Power Rangers were distracted by all of their treats, our little Zachy took advantage!! FINALLY he got to be a Power Ranger!!

And of course, we all become our mom's right? The next day, I let them each pick 10 pieces of candy and got rid of the rest!!

What a great Halloween!!

Daddy's Week Off!!

Aside from Christmas, Daddy rarely gets time off!! So when he does, we try ti fit as much fun stuff in to one week as we possibly can!!

Well - this time, it didn't happen so much like that because on Daddy's first day off - he got STREP!!! We really only had a weekend once everybody felt better - but it was a great weekend!!

We went camping with some friends and the boys had a BLAST (as did mom and dad)!

Here's our brand new tent - which was apparently the "cool" tent on the block because that is where all of the kiddos played!!

Zachy enjoyed the rocks and the water faucet in the middle of the campground!! I guess it's smart to have water there - but honestly - trying to keep a 2 year old away from a water faucet...........

After we came home from camping - we took the kiddos to Austin Park!! It has EVERYTHING, bumper boats, race track, batting cages, arcade - all things little people can't take part in (but it's also free 3 and under - so I can't complain!!).

They did have teacups that Jake took over - the kid is AMAZING at spinning us!!

And then they rode on a little train which was cute.

The main reason for going was mini-golf!! The boys LOVE golfing with daddy - so we thought they might enjoy it. And they did really, really well - surprisingly!!

First Day of School

Matthew and Jacob started school last week!! They have been talking about it for months and months. And they've thanked Heavenly Father every night in their prayers (for the past 6 months) that they get to go to school.

They love their teacher, Miss Michelle, and have done all kinds of fun things already!

Here they are on their first day!! Handsome little guys, huh?! (Please ignore Matthew's black eye!!)


Mommy and Zachy are keeing busy with the boys being away. Every Tuesday, Zachy has music class with all of his little friends at our house (same as the boys last year). We have 14 kids total!! And on Thursdays, Zachy has his own little preschool with Rose, Claire and Scott. We take turns - so I teach every 4th week. He'll love it and I get a few hours to do who-knows-what!!!

Our family is getting so big!! They're not kidding when they say that "kids grow up so fast" and "treasure every moment!" I know they're all only gone a few hours a week, but I'm SO excited when I get to go pick them up!!

SEAWORLD!

On Labor Day, we decided to take the boys down to Seaworld in San Antonio. I have the best memories of going to Seaworld in San Diego with my family when I was growing up. So I wanted to take advantage of living so close to one and take the boys!! We had a BLAST!!!

A few favorite moments of the day...........................

1 - Seeing the amazement in the boy's eyes as they watched the Shamu show - it was absolutely stunning! And they still can't stop talking about how the lady rode on Shamu's nose!!

2 - Watching Matt and Jake in the 4D Pirate show - every time something would pop out of the screen, they'd lift their glasses up off their eyes (a few times, on and off, on and off, on and off) just to make sure it wasn't real!!

3 - The wave pool - the entire family LOVED it! How smart are they to put a water park in the middle of Seaworld in Texas!!

if you can't find any other reason.................

I don't often post opinion blogs, because frankly, I have VERY strong opinions and I don't really want to put anybody off. I usually try to post cute pictures of my boys for the grandmas and leave the opinion blogs to others.

But something happened to me today that I can't pass up!! Seriously - what has happened to the medical profession. Now, don't write me off just yet. I know there are great surgeons and Dr's out there. My father-in-law is a surgeon, we have trusted every specialist we've seen, I LOVE my OB and we LOVE our pediatrician. But we don't have a family Dr that we love.

So last week when I was dealing with a wierd taste/dryness in my mouth, I went to a Dr at a local clinic that people have referred us to (the clinic, not this particular Dr - but he had a last minute opening). This was a BIG mistake.

The Dr walks in, asks me what's going on. I tell him I have a metal taste in my mouth and dryness and he looks at me and asks, in all seriousness (I thought he must be joking, but he wasn't) "Do you know of anybody who might be trying to slowly poison you with lead?" I laughed, but he didn't even crack a smile. So I quickly wiped the smile off my face and said, "um, no."

As if I wasn't already to just run out the door, then he pulls out his handy little palm pilot thing (I know they have a new name, but I'm still caught in the early 2000's technology-wise) and types in dry mouth and metal taste to some symptom checker, turns around so I can see the results (as if I should be impressed that he is SO technologically savvy) and says - do any of these other symptoms fit?

NO, I told you that these were my ONLY symptoms!! Then, after a short, LAME physical that would produce NOTHING, he says, "Well, we can do some blood work labs and see what we find and then I'll see you back here in 2 weeks." I say "Ok" partly because I'm completely dumbfounded that he thinks what he has just doe is OK and partly because I just want to get out of there.

SERIOUSLY!! Is this what the profession has come to? Have they not heard of the internet? Do they not know that before I walked into their office, I had already visited the Symptom Checker on WebMd as well as every holistic medicine site out there? I was going to him for his "medical expertise", to find out something I couldn't find online and he pulls out his handy, dandy palm pilot!!

Jump to 1 week later, I'm feeling a lot better. After a rough last week, symptoms are almost gone and I think they'll go away on their own completely.

So I call to cancel all appointments, and they won't let me without talking to a nurse and the Dr. Whatever - that's not going to change my decision. The nurse called me back this morning because of course the Dr isn't in on Mondays, and here's the kicker..............................

"We'd like you to come back in for some depression and anxiety tests."

Oh No You Didn't!! Since I'm a WOMAN and you can't figure out what's wrong with me - it must be depression or anxiety, right?!

Needless to say, I told them very nicely where to put their tests and hung up the phone!! End of story. Thoughts?!

Disclaimer: I have many friends and family who deal with depression/anxiety/etc and I believe it can be a very real thing and is a big trial in their lives. I have my own issues (can anybody say OCD), just not depression. And when a Dr uses depression as a general diagnoses, it's not fair to those with the disease and those without it!!

Chuck-E-Cheese

Just like we did for the boy's 2nd birthday - we took the kiddos to Chuck-E-Cheese for some games and fun (armed to the hilt with anti-bacterial hand sanitizer - YUCK!!)

They had an absolute blast!!!

Really - Zach did LOVE every second of it............except when I tried to take his picture! The boys were happy to pose!





And knock-on-wood, we didn't even get sick................yet!

Happy Birthday, Zachy!!

Can you believe it? I can't!! My baby boy is 2!!

We celebrated his b-day Thomas-style - because he LOVES choo-choos!!

Here's his b-day cake!! I know I'm no Alison (Kloft - my amazing baker friend!) - but my boys LOVE this little cake.

Zachy was thrilled with his presents!! He got a puppet set and puppet theater from Grandma Sheen, a fun musical guitar from Grandma and Grandpa Wilde, a truck and tractor from M&J (although it took quite a bit of convincing for them to understand that this was ZACH'S b-day) and he got a Sit-n-spin and little tool bench from mom and dad!



I can hardly believe that it was 2 years ago that this sweet little boy came into our lives!! He LOVES his big brothers and they LOVE him!! He has a strong personality - he has to with twin older brothers!! He can definitely hold his own!! He is our little comedian - I don't know where he gets his crazy, animated expressions from - must be his dad!! And boy does this kid know how to manipulate his parents!! He has us both wrapped around his tiny, little pinky finger - and we LOVE it!! Even though he's growing up - and too fast I might add - he's still my baby boy!!

Did that girl just hit my car?!

So I was sitting waiting for my half-priced drinks at Sonic today when I heard a big THUD and my car moved a bit. I looked back to see if the kids were out of their seats and as I turned around - I saw one of the food delivery girls walking past my window. She didn't stop but the timing was too perfect - so I said out loud "Did that girl just hit my car?" I don't know who I was talking to - maybe to her, maybe to myself, maybe to the boys - it was just my natural reaction! But she heard me, turned to look at me and then walked quickly inside the Sonic doors.

I was still trying to figure out what had happened - so I got out of my car to make sure I didn't imagine it - and sure enough, on my rear tail light - there were 2 long scrapes from her tray!! She had clearly run into my car - and by the sound of the THUD - she hit is pretty hard!!

Now this wasn't a huge deal. The tail lights still work. You can see the scrapes but they're not hugely obvious.

But this chick clearly hit my car - HARD - and ran away. As I was looking at it, my server came out and asked if something was wrong and I said, "I think one of the girls hit my car." And the girl who did it was walking out to another delivery and came over to look and said "Did I do that?" and kept on moving - as did my server. No apology, no comped drinks - nothing!! I was kind of shocked!! I took the drinks and sat back inside my car right outside the windows where all of the delivery girls were standing - and I can see them all looking at me and laughing.

In most cases, I would have said, "Whatever, it's no big deal" and would have gone on with my day. But they were laughing. So..............................no more nice girl!! I pushed the little red button that you push to order and said "Can you please send your manager out?!" I asked him what he could do (at this point, I could see all of the girls inside nervously watching). I got his card and and an insurance claim report. (Oh - and by the way - his card was a FREE MEDIUM DRINK card with his name and number scribbled on the back! A medium, not a large, not a meal, a medium drink!)

Now seriously - am I really going to file an insurance report? I don't think so - depending on my mood of course!! But had this girl just stopped when she did it, and owned up to it - oh and possibly apologized...............I would have driven away with my drinks!! Maybe next time she'll do the right thing!

Kids are SO literal!!

So we're driving home from the Rock'n River water park near our house and Matthew suddenly has to pee. The following ensues...................

Matthew - "Mommy - I have to pee"

Jessica - "We're almost home - can you hold it?"

Troy - "Hold it buddy - squeeze your legs!"

We look back and Matthew has one hand on each of his legs - and he's "squeezing his legs" with his hands - just like we told him! At that point, I start cracking up!! Troy maintained his composure as usual!

Troy - "No Matthew, squeeze them together!"

So we look back and Matthew has moved both of his hands to one leg - hands "together" - and is squeezing!

Kids take things SO literal!

Tweezers - a tool no mother should live without!

A few of you may remember one of my first posts to this blog. I gave all of you moms out there a few tips on how to get your kids to clean up - and one of them was "give them some tweezers!!" Do you remember?

Well today - I found yet another reason that tweezers are essential in my home!!



Does everybody know what these are?

Pom poms - those cute little puffy balls that you let your kids use on art projects!! Right? I bought them a few weeks ago - trying to do some crafts to keep my kids entertained indoors during the summer heat until Jacob healed up from his surgery (and his second ear infection!)

Never in my wildest dreams did I think that my boys would find another use for them!!

But - oh they did - and it wasn't a good one!!



So I'm sitting at my desk on the phone with my insurance company - and I had JUST gotten through to speak to the right person about replacing my roof (I LOVE TEXAS HAIL!) - and my boys come downstairs SCREAMING!! And I'm thinking - seriously?! Right when I get on the phone - this better be something serious! So I look for blood - no blood. I ask why they are crying and they just keep crying.

Then Jacob points to his nose!! And says "ball"! So I'm freaking out - I can't imagine what is up there! If I use tweezers, am I just going to stick it deeper? At least I can still kind of see Jacob's - so I go for his first. After much screaming (both me and Jacob) - my trusty tweezers come out along with a POM POM!! Yup - they both stuck one of those stinking Pom Pom things up their nose - WAY UP THEIR NOSE!! Matthew's was a little tougher - but it came out too!

Can I just say I LOVE TWEEZERS? Had I not had tweezers - I would have had to go to the Dr. or Urgent Care or the ER to get these things out of my boys nose!!

Are you taking pictures of my kids?

Last night, we took in our second baseball game at Dell Stadium. Last time, we sat in seats and let the boys play at the playscape for most of the game. This time we decided to do Berm seats (lawn seats just beyond the outfield, for all of you who haven't been!).

BERM IS THE WAY TO GO!! It's all families out there and the kiddos can run around without bugging anybody! Not to mention, we sat right behind where the pitchers warm-up - so we got to watch that.

So all was going well. People were watching my kids and laughing - and I was getting the normal questions (triplets? how far apart? etc). Until.........................I swore I saw a girl take a picture of Zachy!! Wierd huh? I thought, ok she must have just taken a picture of something BEHIND Zachy and Zachy just got in the way. Right?! So I let it go.

Then like an hour later - Troy asks me if it's wierd that that girl is taking pictures of our kids!!

Now, she seems pretty normal. I think she was pregnant and she was there with her husband and some friends. She was a cute little blonde girl wearing a UT hat - probably in her mid-twenties. Maybe she just didn't know better? Maybe she was practicing for when she had kids? Maybe she was trying out a new camera?

But it made me just a little uncomfortable! This is wierd right? Have you ever had people you don't know take pictures of your kids?

Tell me you watched only the most entertaining night of television of the entire year?! And tell me you know what I'm talking about!! If you do - we can be best friends! If you don't - well Troy didn't either until we got married and now he LOVES it (although he might not admit it in public)!!

The TONY'S!!!

The only night when you can sit back in the comfort of your own home and, for free (because most GOOD shows cost at least $80+ per ticket) watch fabulous performances from the best Broadway shows!

I have to say - the last few years, I was sorely disappointed!! The revivals were just OK, the new musicals were just typical and nowhere near clean entertainment and frankly the format of the show and the performances were just OK. But this year............................WOW!!

The new shows: Xanadu (not really musical genius, but funny), Cry-Baby (wow phenomenal dancing!), In The Heights (really new and fresh, collaberates old Braodway with rap and pop - great voices!) and Passing Strange (so happy this didn't win!).

The REVIVALS - now here's what you wanted to watch!! Gypsy with Patti Lupone (WOW), Sunday In The Park With George (another Sondheim gem), Grease (fun and light entertainment that we all grew up watching) and South Pacific (a Broadway classic).

The PERFORMANCES - all I can say if you missed it is "Thank Goodness for youtube.com!" Patti Lupone singing Roses Turn - it was historic!! So here you go - watch it!

Did you LOVE it?!

What a champ!!

One of the scarier things in a mom's life is having to watch her child be taken away from her down the hall to an operating room!! Today was my 3rd time - this time with Jakey!!

Last Thursday, his hernia popped out again and was really hard and painful! So we rushed up to Temple (Texas) and saw the surgeons and they scheduled a surgery for this morning. Now a hernia surgery is pretty straight forward - or so I hear - I couldn't do it!! But it does require anesthesia - which just adds a little more stress to the situation.

Jakey was a CHAMP!! We were taken in almost immediately because the person before us was late (so we got their spot - yeah for us - too bad for them!!) They had this CUTE girl come in with a bag full of stuff to help Jakey understand the process. She had pictures of the operating room, mask with the balloon on the end that the anesthesia gas comes through (and he got to blow up the balloon through the mask), a teddy bear that he could take with him - along with his new Power Ranger!! And they showed him a picture of the yellow line that they called "the hugs and kisses line." That was where you gave mom and dad hugs and kisses before your surgery.

He put on his little robe - seriously there is nothing cuter than a little kid in a hospital robe. And they wheeled him out in a red wagon. He looked for the yellow line - we kissed and hugged - and he was off!! He didn't even look back - just kicked back in the wagon and took a ride!

Next thing we know - we are in a post-op room and holding a VERY cranky boy. Anesthesia is not fun to wake up from. That took about an hour and now we have our Jakey back!!

We received 2 instructions from the Dr.
1 - Keep the wound dry - ok easy enough.
2 - Keep him from doing anything too rough or physically demanding - YEAH RIGHT!!!

It's 4 hours since we got home - about the time the local and Tylenol should have worn off - and this kid can't be kept down!! We're in for a rough couple of days!! Not for him - for mom who is going to be stressed out with this crazy, active child!!

But he sure is a champ!! Go Jakey!!
