Who's Who?!

Pet peeves of a mother of twins!!

DISCLAIMER - take this with a grain of salt - I did it all before I had twins too!!

The most common question that I get asked (aside from "Are they triplets?") is "Are they identical?" Don't feel bad if you've asked it - everybody does. But why that question?! Is it cooler to be identical twins? Is it more of a novelty? Do people even really know what that means? I mean - I've heard of people asking mothers of B-G twins if they're identical!?

Sometimes I answer "yes" - and I get responses like "oh wow" and you can see how cool they think that is written all over their faces. And then the questions begin.............."Are they best friends?" "Is one more dominant than the other?" "Do they have their own language?"
Sometimes I answer "no" - and you can see the intrigue disappear. Sad!

Here's the thing............I don't really know the answer and frankly, I don't really care to know. They were in different sacks, but my first ultrasound was too late to tell whether the sacks were really separate or had just split. When I delivered them, I only had one placenta and the Dr's said they were 99.9% sure they were identical because of that one fact (like they knew - the placentas easly could have fused together)!

The most important thing to me is that they are individuals and are comfortable and happy with who they are. You'll never hear me call them "the twins." When I'm referring to them together, I always call them "the boys."

What makes me the happiest is when people can tell them apart!! (Because honestly people, they look NOTHING alike!). If you can't - don't feel bad - you're in a strong group! (Grandmas - you are not included in this statement - you MUST tell them apart - they're 3 for heaven's sake!!)

But if you can tell them apart........for that one simple thing, you will forever hold a special place in my heart.

So here goes.....................who's who?!

I'll give you a freebie - everybody gets at least 1 out of 3!

Who's in red?
And who's in blue?

(FYI - they're playing Harry Pottuh - as they say in their best Queen's English!)

Okay, I can usually tell them apart in person, so if I get this wrong I will feel like a dork. It is Zach in the first picture (of course), Jacob in red, Matthew in blue.

I'm with Jodie. I think Jacob's in red, Matthew's in blue.

But I haven't seen these guys in awhile and they're looking quite grown up these days, so if I'm wrong, it's your fault for not having us over more.

I'm just sayin' . . .

Have fun in Dallas!

Okay, I hadn't even read this post when I commented on which was which earlier. But honestly, I can't tell who's who is these pictures. Maybe Jacob's in blue because I saw him in that blue shirt the other day. I don't know. But you are seriously NUTS when you say they look nothing alike. Get real!

Okay what in the world are you talking about saying they look nothing alike. Are you crazy? And by the way...Are they best friends? hahaha

They look alike in the fact that they are all super cute. I think i need a reference point to take a guessa t Matthew and Jacob because I haven't seen them since they were 6 months old!
I can totally understand your frustration with the questions. Iknow it's not the same but when Ivy is dressed in pink or has a pink blanket in her stroller or flowers on her outfit or a dress and people ask me if she's a boy or girl-- what the? I don't think I should have to pierce her ears or permanently attach her bows until she grows some hair, but come, on!

I'm totally guilty of asking you at least a few times if they're identical! Lol! Though it was never a 'novelty' question...more of a, "oh my gosh, they look so much alike how can they NOT be identical?!" question. I wanted to clarify though because I went to high school with twin girls who looked identical, but were fraternal. I just didn't want to guess wrong! LOL!! (Plus - I guess I assumed that it was a medical standard to test for whether or not they're identical. I didn't know you had the option of not knowing! :) I think it's sad that some people have behaved as if fraternal twins are less special than identical! Either way they're absolutely adorable!
My guess: Jake = Red, Matt = Blue?

I am one of the Grandmas and I can usually tell them apart by the time I leave. To me it isn't whether they look alike or whether they don't, but how unique they are and how proud I am to be a grandma of multiples. Each of the boys have a darling personality that is just theirs. I see them as close as I have ever seen three year olds be. I marvel at what a great job you have done with instilling their love for each other and how they show it. I feel like I get twice the joy but also twice the astonishment at how much work they are with their endless energy and spunk! One thing for sure...I always know which one is Zachary! I know that you will be asked your questions the rest of your life and they will be asked that too. They can and I bet will have fun with it. Troy was the biggest teaser of identical twins I have ever seen. He used to ask Sarah when Kathryn got hurt, did she feel her pain? I had to laugh when Troy became the father of boys that look so much alike! The girls "loved" his attention, and were always so good natured about it. Just a view from a proud Grandma!
